Poll Reveals Resident Backing for Cannabis Legalization Bill

News 21-June 8

A recent poll by the University of New Hampshire’s States of Opinion Project shows that nearly two-thirds (65%) of New Hampshire residents support legalizing cannabis for recreational use. This is a slight decline from 72% support in May 2023, mainly due to decreased support among Independents and Republicans.

Specific Bill HB 1633

The poll also revealed that 61% of respondents support HB 1633, a cannabis legalization bill that was recently rejected by House lawmakers. The bill had strong backing from Democrats and independents, but only a minority of Republicans supported it.

Public Awareness and Support

Only 16% of Granite Staters were well-informed about the bill’s details, while 45% had some knowledge, and 38% had little to no information. Among those familiar with the bill, 72% of Democrats, 70% of independents, and 47% of Republicans supported it.

Historical Support Trends

Support for cannabis legalization has seen fluctuations, peaking at 75% in 2021. The current 65% support level is the lowest since 2016.

Opposition and Legislative Challenges

Opposition to legalization has decreased, with only 19% against it. The debate over HB 1633 highlighted concerns about the proposed state-controlled franchise model, leading to its rejection. This decision may impact future reform efforts, especially with upcoming gubernatorial elections.

Future of Cannabis Legislation

New Hampshire lawmakers continue to work on cannabis reform, with recent efforts to expand the medical marijuana program. The legislative impasse and upcoming elections will play a crucial role in determining the future of cannabis legalization in the state.
